Madeline

Madeline is now sold. We have no available puppies at this time. You may get on our waiting list for a litter planned in the fall. We should have brown and white puppies. This litter will be in Granite Bay by Sacramento.

SOLD
Here is a picture of the only puppy left in my litter.
She is a smooth face or improper coat. It is a recessive gene that our breed has no test for.
The only way you know that your dog is carrying it is when it shows up in a litter.
Don't let her coat fool you she is all water dog, in fact I think she likes the water better than the proper coated ones. She is a great dog and one of my favorites. Please call if you are interested in knowing more about her. Our home number is 209-4626262.

Peanut Sniffing PWD

Below is an exciting story about a PWD who was trained to sniff out peanuts for a very allergic girl. What is so cool is the PWD is and Improper Coat. That means it does not have the typical coat of a PWD, its coat is more like a border collie or a flat coat retriever. They are fullblooded PWD's in every way except for their coat.

Allergic girl’s dog protects her life from peanuts
Portuguese water dog is specially trained to sniff out deadly allergen.

Portuguese water dog Rock’O senses peanuts for 8-year-old Riley Mers, who is allergic. TODAY’s Jenna Wolfe talks to Riley and her mother, Sherry, about the amazing dog.

The idea was born of the desperation that only parents of children with food allergies so severe they are virtual prisoners in their own homes can fully appreciate: If dogs can be trained to sniff out bombs and narcotics, why not allergens such as peanut protein?
This is the idea that came to Sherry and Brett Mers of Monument, Colo., whose daughter, Riley, is so allergic to peanuts that simply touching a bit of peanut shell can burn a hole in her skin and send her into life-threatening anaphylactic shock.
“I was just running through the park playing with my sister in the sand, and I thought a bee had stung me,” Riley said, recounting the story for TODAY correspondent Jenna Wolfe Thursday from her home. “I started jumping up and down and screaming. And I jumped to my mom and dad and they took the peanut shell out, and I almost had to have a skin graft.”

Today, 8-year-old Riley doesn’t have to fear a repeat of that frightening and painful experience. As she sat next to her mother on their couch, her arms were wrapped around the neck of a 2-year-old Portuguese water dog named Rock’O. Thanks to the dog, Riley has been able to do simple things she couldn’t do before, like going into a candy store and walking without fear through a mall.
Extreme allergyRiley was born with her allergy, which was diagnosed when she was 5 months old. Peanut and other allergies run a range of severity, and Riley’s doctors told her parents that the girl’s allergy was as extreme as it could be. Inhaling even a minute quantity of peanut dust can be life-threatening.
“Anytime peanut protein gets into her bloodstream, what happens with Riley and other children that have anaphylactic allergies is, a lot of times they’ll have eczema, also,” Sherry Mers told Wolfe. “So her skin cracks, and then whenever she touches something, it gets straight into her bloodstream, and that’s what causes her to go into anaphylaxis.
“If there’s a heavy peanut protein in the air, and she breathes it in and it gets in her lungs … it can be very serious very quickly,” Mers added. “And there’s no way for you to be able to tell all the places where a peanut might be.”
The Merses had peanut-proofed their home when they learned of the allergy, but Riley was a virtual prisoner there until she got Rock’O. She did go to school occasionally, but had to stay in an isolation room. For the most part, she studies online from her home. But now, because of Rock’O, she can finally think about going to college someday.
Special trainingThe idea of training a dog to sniff allergens came to Sherry Mers independently. She asked around and found out that there were at least two organizations that train dogs for that purpose. The family got their dog through one of them, Angel Service Dogs.
The training isn’t cheap. The dog can’t make mistakes; it has to detect allergens 100 percent of the time to protect its owner. Rock’O’s training cost $10,000, which was more than the Merses could afford. But family and friends donated the funds so Riley could gain some freedom and security.
Sherry Mers and her husband have gotten involved in training dogs themselves. To keep Rock’O up to snuff — and sniff — Brett Mers has to put him through peanut-finding exercises. Sherry has gotten involved by writing a kids’ book about allergen service dogs called “The Allergy Friend” that’s due to be published in the fall.
As for Riley, she’s just happy to be able to go out into the world. Since getting Rock’O last month, she’s been saved several times from life-threatening exposure to peanuts. One time was in her own backyard, where Rock’O stopped her before she got near the shells of peanuts that squirrels were eating in a tree.
Wolfe asked Riley about her first trip inside a candy store, made possible by Rock’O.
“That was really cool, because the closest I ever get to a candy store is at the checkout place where they have those shelves that have some candy on it,” Riley said. Rock’O, who wears a bright yellow service-dog vest, steered her away from the chocolate aisle and even detected peanut M&Ms that Sherry Mers never saw. Riley ended up in the gummy candy aisle, where she bought a big gummy butterfly.
“Would you say Rock’O changed your life?” Wolfe asked Riley.
The girl hugged her pal and guardian, smiled and replied with feeling, “I would say that.”

re:going to the vets for an xray

I finally have time to write the story of taking Farusca to the vet for her xray. I normally dont do this but decided this time it would be nice to know how many pups she was carrying. I have a great repro vet who gives me her home number so we can call and get advice in the middle of the night when my dog is whelping her puppies. I took her on Wed Feb 25. Farusca was due on March 1.
The xray showed 11 puppies. I noticed one puppy looked like it was ready to come out. It was lined up with its head right on the edge of her bottom. The vet agreed and said she will probably have them very soon.

While I was talking to the vet in her office before we left Farusca lifted up her tail. I said she only does that when she is ready to have a puppy. Dr Metzler said "Well you better get a towel so it doesnt fall on the floor" One of the vet techs brought me a towel and we delivered the first puppy right in Dr Metzler's office.

After I got over the shock of having the first puppy, they put us in a room with a big old conforter and some hemostats. I was trying to figure out how to get home. I was an hour and half away from home! I had to be at work at 12:00. I had my minivan and I didnt even have a crate in it.

I finally called my husband and he took off work and drove our Sprinter up to get me. We left the minivan at Dr Metzler's and Ty drove me home. Farusca had delivered three puppies at the vet's office and then she delivered three more in the back of the Sprinter on the way home. I called work and said I had a family emergency and I wouldnt be in that day.

Everything went well and we had all 11 delivered by 4:30 that afternoon. The puppies are doing well. We have a couple of youtube videos of them and plan on taking another one tonight.

Odin's Debut

Sunday I went to Golden Gate Kennel Club dog show. It is a benched show which means you have to sit on the bench with your dog all day. The public comes and asked you tons of questions about your dogs. It can be fun but it is also grueling. I was recovering from a bad cold so it was hard to talk to long without coughing.

I took a youtube of Odin. He is a puppy from Debbi and Emmy's last litter. I will post a link so you can watch Odin at his first show. He did so well. My best friend Gail showed him for us. She did a wonderful job. Gail is great with puppies. Very gentle.

The Volhard Diet

Hi,
Anyone wanting to get a puppy from Rustyco Water Dogs needs to obtain a copy of "Dog Training for Dummies" by Wendy Volhard.

I have followed the Volhard diet for dogs since 2000. I have had amazing results with keeping my dogs on a raw diet. The unusually thing about the Volhard diet is there are no bones.(except once a week we give a raw bone after dinner. The diet is fully balanced and very healthy. What I like about DTFD is that it is a great training book plus you get the chapters on the raw diet with three different versions to use. You can make the diet from scratch, buy it dehydrated, or there is also a modifed kibble diet. It also has a chapter on minimal vaccines.

The best place to buy it is from www.half.com. They sell all sorts of books that are used. You can pick one up very reasonably. If you want to further understand the diet pick up "Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog" also by Wendy Volhard. It is the book I first read when my first water dog, Quarry had alot of health issues. The diet helped him tremendously and he was able to to live to 12 and 1/2 yrs.

NEW LITTER PLANNED

We are planning a new with Farusca. We wanted to breed her to a dog that carries brown. We found out she carries brown by doing a DNA test. One possible dog was in San Diego, the other in Seattle area. Her first breeding date happened to fall on Christmas day. My daughter was visiting from Idaho. I did not want to leave Stockton for Christmas so we bred her to a local dog.
His name is Ch. Rustyco Giorgio de Toraq. He is owned by a good friend of mine in Sacramento. This is his first breeding so we dont know if he carries brown. Neither of his brothers carry brown but their maternal grandmother was brown so they do have a chance of carrying it.

The due date of the puppies will be Feb 28, give or take a few days either way. Since both the mom and dad have a lot of white this should be a colorful litter.
